Shared Care Protocols for ADHD Medication
This practice is committed to supporting patients with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) through shared care arrangements. This applies for both paediatric and adult patients.
What is a Shared Care Protocol?
A shared care protocol is an agreement between a specialist ADHD service and your GP practice. It outlines how the responsibility for prescribing and monitoring your ADHD medication is shared.
ADHD team responsibilities:
The ADHD team find the correct dose for you through initial titration, and future adjustments where needed. They ensure that prescribing is safe and effective through reviews – initially through more regular reviews and then reducing this to annual reviews as a minimum. They won’t request us to fulfil a Shared Care Protocol until you are stable on a particular dose and it has been deemed safe.
GP responsibilities:
Our responsibility lies in prescribing ADHD medications once you have been established on an appropriate dose and it has been deemed safe for you. We must have a clear Shared Care Policy outlining the medication, dosage, and monitoring requirements before we can take over this responsibility. We can support the ADHD team in providing updated information about your health to ensure their prescribing remains safe.
Patient Responsibilities:
To maintain this shared care arrangement, patients are responsible for:
· Maintaining contact with the specialist team and attending all appointments.
· Providing us with any updated medical information, or attending any reviews with us that we require for continued prescribing of medications under the Shared Care Agreement
· For any patient undertaking private ADHD appointments: Understanding that the initial private consultations, titration medication, and ongoing annual reviews are the patient’s financial responsibility and not covered by the NHS.
Failure to attend annual reviews or provide updated information may result in the discontinuation of shared care prescribing.
We aim to work collaboratively with specialist ADHD teams to ensure continuity of care for our patients. If you have any questions regarding this policy, please do not hesitate to contact the practice.
